The treatment

What is fractional CO₂ resurfacing?

Secret PRO delivers fractional carbon dioxide (CO₂) laser energy in tiny, spaced treatment columns. It removes small areas of surface skin and stimulates repair and collagen remodelling while leaving surrounding skin to support healing.

Because CO₂ is an ablative treatment, redness, swelling and peeling are expected. Secret PRO also offers radiofrequency (RF) microneedling; the two technologies can be planned separately or together when appropriate. The assessment determines the area, settings and recovery plan.

In brief

What to expect

A medical assessment, preparation and numbing plan come first. Protective measures and a defined aftercare regimen are essential. Downtime depends on intensity and area.

Personalised assessment: We review your medical history, skin, treatment area and any reasons to defer treatment.

01 / Concerns

Where can fractional CO₂ help?

The benefit depends on the type of scar or skin change, the treatment area and your ability to allow for healing.

Eyes · upper lids

Hooded eyelids

For mild to moderate hooding caused mainly by loose or crepey upper eyelid skin, carefully selected fractional CO₂ may improve texture and give a modest tightening effect.

It cannot remove substantial excess skin or replace upper eyelid surgery, especially if the skin affects vision. An eye-area assessment is essential.

Eyes · lower lids

Puffy eyes and under-eye skin

CO₂ may soften fine lines and crepey lower eyelid skin. Some puffiness is due to protruding fat pads or fluid retention; resurfacing does not reliably remove those causes.

The clinician will identify what is creating the appearance of a bag before recommending treatment. The eyelids often become temporarily more swollen during recovery.

Scars

Acne scars

May improve the edges and surface texture of selected depressed acne scars. Deeper, tethered or ice-pick scars may need additional procedures, and complete removal is unlikely.

Scars

Other scars

Some healed surgical or injury scars may benefit from resurfacing. Scar age, thickness, colour and location affect the plan; raised or active scars may need another approach.

Skin quality

Lines and sun-damaged texture

May soften fine lines, roughness and uneven texture, particularly around the eyes and mouth. Deep folds and volume loss usually need different treatments.

Other areas

Neck and décolletage

These areas can heal differently from facial skin. Suitability, treatment intensity and downtime require an area-specific assessment.

Eye-area treatment is only considered after a detailed assessment and with the appropriate protective eye shields. A surgical or medical opinion may be more useful for significant hooding, prominent fat bags or unexplained swelling.

02 / Your plan

How many sessions, and when will I see a difference?

The strength of treatment and number of visits are chosen for your skin and the result you want.

Course

Often one treatment; sometimes more

One CO₂ session may be enough for a selected concern. Scars or more extensive damage may need a staged course or other techniques alongside resurfacing. Your clinician will discuss intervals and a realistic endpoint.

Results

Gradual change after healing

Once peeling settles, the skin surface may look smoother. Collagen remodelling and scar improvement continue over the following months. The degree of change varies, and photographs can help assess progress.

03 / Treatment & downtime

What to expect before and after

Plan time away from social events and allow your skin to heal without picking or covering it prematurely.

Before treatment

Assessment and preparation

We review skin type, scars or eye anatomy, medication, cold sores, recent sun exposure and healing history. Numbing and protective measures are agreed before treatment. Eye-area procedures require suitable eye shields and an experienced operator.

On the day

Heat and stinging

Topical anaesthetic is commonly used; you may still feel heat, prickling or stinging. Afterwards, the skin may feel like a strong sunburn. We provide written aftercare specific to the area and settings used.

First 2-3 days

Redness and swelling

Redness, warmth, swelling and sometimes pinpoint oozing or crusting are expected. Eyelids may swell noticeably, often more than the rest of the face. Contact the clinic for worsening pain, spreading redness, pus or vision symptoms.

Days 3-14

Peeling and visible downtime

The treated skin usually darkens or feels rough, then flakes or peels. Many people allow around 1-2 weeks for visible healing after CO₂ resurfacing, but lighter or stronger settings and delicate areas vary. Pinkness can last weeks or longer.

Aftercare: Follow your clinician’s cleansing and moisturising instructions, avoid picking, and protect healing skin from sun exposure. Ask when makeup, exercise and active skincare can safely resume. There is no universal “zero downtime” CO₂ treatment.

Helpful answers

Fractional CO₂ laser FAQs

Is this the Secret PRO treatment?

Yes. Secret PRO has a fractional CO₂ laser and an RF microneedling handpiece. Your plan may use CO₂ alone or combine the two at a clinician-chosen interval or protocol. They act at different skin depths and have different aftercare.

Can it lift hooded upper eyelids?

It may modestly tighten selected mild to moderate loose upper eyelid skin and improve crepiness. It does not remove a large skin fold or correct a drooping eyelid muscle. If hooding interferes with vision, seek an appropriate eye or surgical assessment.

Will it remove puffy under-eye bags?

It may improve the overlying crepey skin and fine lines. A prominent bag caused by protruding fat, fluid or another medical cause is unlikely to disappear with resurfacing. We first assess the reason for puffiness; CO₂ itself can temporarily increase swelling.

Is laser treatment near the eyes safe?

The eye area needs an experienced practitioner, careful assessment and appropriate protective eye shields. We will explain suitability and eye-specific risks.

Which scars can it treat?

Selected depressed acne scars and some healed injury or surgical scars may improve. Deep, tethered, raised or inflamed scars can require a different or combined approach. The treatment changes a scar’s appearance; it cannot erase it.

How much downtime should I plan?

Many patients need around 1-2 weeks for obvious redness, swelling and peeling to settle after ablative CO₂, depending on settings and area. The skin may remain pink for weeks or longer. Eyelid swelling can be particularly noticeable in the first few days. We will give a personalised estimate before booking.

When can I wear makeup and return to work?

Work depends on comfort and whether visible healing is acceptable; allow about 1-2 weeks if you want peeling and crusting to settle. Do not apply makeup over unhealed skin. The clinician will advise when the surface has healed enough to resume cosmetics.

How soon will I see a difference, and how many sessions are needed?

Early surface changes become easier to judge after healing, while collagen remodelling develops over months. Some plans use one session; scars or greater damage may warrant additional staged sessions. We review the response before deciding on further treatment.

Does it hurt?

Numbing is usually used, but you may feel heat or stinging during treatment and sunburn-like tenderness afterwards. Comfort options vary with the site and depth of treatment.

Can darker skin tones have fractional CO₂?

Suitability is individual. Darker skin tones may have a higher risk of post-inflammatory darkening or lightening after ablative resurfacing. Assessment, settings and sun protection matter; another approach may be preferable.

What are the main risks?

Possible problems include prolonged redness, pigment changes, infection, cold sore reactivation and, rarely, scarring. Eye-area treatment also needs specific protection. We discuss your personal risks and what symptoms require prompt review.

How does it compare with iPixel or RF microneedling?

iPixel is fractional Er:YAG resurfacing; Secret PRO CO₂ is another ablative resurfacing option. RF microneedling delivers energy beneath the skin through needles. Intensity, targets and downtime vary, so the best choice follows an assessment rather than a device label.
